Founded in 2014, MPavilion is a unique annual architecture commission and design event for Melbourne. Every year for four years, an outstanding architect will be commissioned to design a temporary pavilion for the Queen Victoria Gardens. An event hub, a meeting place and an invitation to experiment, each MPavilion brings creative collaborators together to present a free, four-month program of talks, workshops and performances from October to February.
Australian architect Sean Godsell designed the inaugural MPavilion—a form inspired by iconic outback sheds and verandas. First constructed in the Queen Victoria Gardens for MPavilion's 2014/15 season, Sean's commission will now move to a permanent home at Melbourne's Hellenic Museum. "A simple 12m by 12m steel structure with glazed roof and fully automated outer skin," it opens and closes to echo the way plants respond to the sun.
